Arabella is a proud woman of Victorian England who rebels against the puritanical norms of society. The book details the sexual awakening and erotic adventures of “Charlie", a young man born into upperclass British society. The original edition was published in four volumes. The first two (this book) detailing Charlie's introduction to sex and his exploits up to his teenage years. Volumes three and four were about his more mature years. Today, it is often published as two seperate books.

On the way to the place he plans to end his life, Anthony Dart carelessly tosses a coin to a street urchin. When a thief grabs the coin, he gives chase. These two interactions lead him to people who guide him to make a better life choice.
